May 22-31, 2011

Hello everyone. We thank you so very much for your prayers and well wishes. It means the world to us that so many of you care about Liam. We'd like to use this blog as a way to communicate in lieu of the many phone calls and to give updates of Liam's progress throughout this ordeal. PLEASE add comments to this post or any future posts (see Comments at bottom).

So, we'll start with the day of the phone call... On Sunday, May 22 we received word that Liam, our son and brother, a U.S. Marine, was seriously wounded by an IED (improvised explosive device) while serving in Afghanistan.


He suffered severe injuries to his upper and lower extremities. We were told his left leg was amputated above the knee. His right leg was broken and knee cap shattered. Liam's left arm suffered various injuries.  His right arm is a mess - one bone broken, while another is shattered.  Surgery will be required to determine whether his right arm can be saved. He has multiple wounds due to shrapnel and debris.
Liam was stable enough to be transported & arrived at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland via Germany on Friday evening. We were able to speak with a nurse who was at Liam's side and she told us that he is "a fighter".

Dad (Billy), brother (Matt), Mom (Laurie), Vinny and Kaitie (Liam's girlfriend) were there to meet Liam. 

As of today, May 31, Liam has undergone two LONG surgeries to remove and clean shrapnel. His vital signs are strong.  He has no damage to head or spine. He is alert and talking (and swearing!). His memory is also intact. He's strengthened by the presence of his family and loved ones.  

We're asking all of you dear friends to keep Liam and our family in your thoughts and prayers as we wait for the unexpected. Please also pray for all those men and women who everyday are putting their lives at risk and pray for their safe return! thank you

    Thank you for setting up this blog, Marci.
    It sounds like he's recovering well already and once I return home from Afghanistan myself, I plan to visit him in Bethesda.

    What a great way for us to keep up with all that is happening while enabling you to , hopefully, have some down time and not be answering multiple phone calls.

    Hi Marci,
    Thanks for posting this blog and keeping us updated. Liam is in our prayers along with all the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to keep us safe and free. We live a few houses down, if there is anything you or Bill need please let us know.

    Our thoughts & prayers are with you Liam. You have a wonderful support system with your family & all of your friends back here in Ct.     Thank God! Our prayers have been answered. So happy to hear the great news about Liam's recovery. Thanks Marci for keeping us updated, Liam has been in our thoughts & prayers since we heard the terrible news. Keep up the good work Liam, can't wait for the day you are well enough to go home.     Bill, Marci and All....thank you for keeping us updated on Liam's condition. Of course he is a fighter....it's the Irish in him!!! LOL Hurry up and get better Liam so we can celebrate St. Patrick's Day...the Guiness is on us!!! LOL We love and miss you and wish you a speedy recovery!

    I just heard from Jackie and Mark. Hang tough brother. Hey! And be nice to the nurses, they might not get your sense of humor and it looks like you are going to need them to get the boogers out of your nose for a little while. I love you man! Officer Pete
