July 9th

     On July 1st our family & friends travelled to Bethesda to celebrate Liam's 30th birthday!  He had lots of visitors that weekend stopping by to wish him well & to celebrate.  Indeed there is great cause for celebration!!  While we were there, the last of Liam's IV's (for pain medication: morphine) was removed. He is now able to take his medication when needed orally.  Liam was again able to go outside and get some fresh air.  It was 90 degrees (hot!) outside, but Liam said it was a "cool" day compared to the 120 degree temperatures he was experiencing in Afghanistan!!  Liam requires much assistance moving from his bed to the wheel chair and this process is tiring for him.  However these efforts are worth it as the change of scenery & the sunshine does him good!  Liam's spirits remain upbeat and positive. He is determined to become more independent. All in all it was a great visit!!...  This past week, Liam underwent surgery for 3 skin grafts.  According to his mom, the skin grafts look great, however Liam's left arm is wrapped & has to stay straight for seven days.  Because Liam does not also have the use of his right arm/hand, he is now not able to feed himself or do much of anything for himself.  But this will only be for a short period. The grafts need 10-14 days to heal then his movement will be restored & he should be able to function again.  Other steps in the right direction: All of Liam's wound vacs and drains have been removed this week...   Liam was happy to hear the news that the rest of his CAG (Civil Affairs Group), with whom he was in Afghanistan, has arrived home safely!  I'm sure many of these guys will be visiting Liam soon! Well friends, that's all for now!
